<i>Zeitenwende</i> One Year On

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a Zeitenwende, or historical turning point, for foreign and defence policy. Expectations profound geopolitical, geostrategic geo-economic transformation were raised both in Germany among Berlin’s allies. One year later, Germany’s greatest success has come the arena, where progress been made reduce energy imports from Russia. Geopolitically, picture is less convincing. While committed NATO territory against potential Russian aggression, it not obvious whether government really perceives Russia as direct threat country. Berlin yet formulate convincing geopolitical leadership role Europe, remains be seen if new minister, Boris Pistorius, will succeed giving shape much-needed Bundeswehr reform resolve major readiness procurement challenges.
